After each contestant had met with every person of the opposite gender, they would rank who they liked the most. As the number of dates dropped, the time spent with each person increased, from 30 minutes to several hours. I was crying the whole time.

And in doing so, it has taken over the lives of social media users unable to pry themselves away from their screens since its release this month. The show’s premise turns the dynamic of modern romance on its head: While most people use dating apps to select potential partners based on looks, contestants on “Love Is Blind” are meant to fall in love based on personality, before ever seeing each other.

The catch? Contestants who partner up after meeting in the show’s “dating pods,” where the hopefuls can hear but not see each other, will have to become engaged and agree to marry in a matter of weeks in order to actually meet.

I received a call some time ago from a childhood friend who lived in Denver, telling me she had a really great guy for me to meet. He had grown up in Los Angeles and was going to be back in L. I was less than enthused. A guy who lived in Denver? What good would that do me? I was living in L. He never called. I was actually relieved.

Then I got a call from him on the Fourth of July. He wanted to get together that night. Like, I was just sitting around with nothing better to do than wait for his call?
